Tickets for Broadway Melodies ON SALE NOW!

Pauper Players is proud to announce tickets for "Broadway Melodies '12" are now on sale through the Student Union Box Office. Preorder tickets will be $5 for anyone with a valid UNC One Card, $10 for general public. Day-of tickets will be $7 with a valid One Card, and $12 for general public.

This year's show includes the following sets:
"Avatartanic" written and directed by Alex Thompson, music directed by Maria Palombo
"The Kardashians: The Musical" written and directed by Mary Morris and Hunter Gray, music directed by Ashley Dean
"Pokemon: The Musical" written and directed by Alex Koceja, music directed by Ben Boecker

The show will run in the Hanes Art Center auditorium (Hanes Art Center 121) Friday, January 27th to Tuesday, January 31st with all shows at 8 pm and an additional Sunday matinee at 2 pm.

We would also like to remind all interested about auditions for Pauper's spring production, "Grease." The Final Countdown!

Hullo!

6:00 – Today we started off rehearsal with some re-working of the “Hotbox” numbers. One of the girls in the number, our cherished Maria Palombo, got injured yesterday and has to be careful about actions on her ankle the rest of the week. Thankfully, Maria’s still part of the show – she is also featured in the show as part of “The Mission” and hopefully she’ll be back to dancing by Friday. We’re still setting up lights, and we’re starting work with props tonight as soon as we start the cue-to-cue—that is, the plan for the lights during the show.

7:00 – Tensions are high during a last-minute substitution by Nathaniel Swofford during a complicated trick while fixing the Crapshooter’s dance. (Richard’s arm muscles are insane). The lights are hot, and any changes are welcome, but a bit stressful for each individual involved. We are finally starting cue-to-cue! This time with set pieces. The (“well-painted,” says Max) newsstand is the first to be put onstage. Exciting!

7:30 – Cue-to-cue is not only well underway, but going rather quickly! We’re about to set up the Mission. It’s actually really exciting to see the set in action for the first time, even if it is very briefly.

9:00 – As you can see, time is flying by. We’re already at the end of Act 1, and I’m a dancer in the Havana scene, so I just got to do some staging and choreography work. SPOILER ALERT: IT LOOKS HOT. Also, I just want to take this time to give a shoutout to the tech crew and our wonderful pianist, Samly Kritchevsky, who is so patient and kind.

10:00 – The lighting designer just took a picture of me without telling me she was. Not cool. We’re almost finished with cue-to-cue (last scene!) and about to run as much of Act 1 as possible before 11, which is when we end every night this week. It’s late, but we tend to need it a lot. I personally love tech week because we are here more. It’s an intense, emotionally high-strung week that brings everyone a lot closer and in the end makes them feel even more proud of the show they have just put on as a solid, together team. Also, we tend to go out to eat a lot afterwards, which is wonderful for both the friends and the food. Last night a bunch of us went through the Wendy’s drive-thru in packed cars and then ate in the parking lot until past midnight.

10:30 – Rehearsal is finished! Our director, Hayley, decided not to have us run some of Act 1 tonight and instead, we’ll start tomorrow when we get here at 6. Overall, it was a successful rehearsal, but I can’t wait to actually run the show tomorrow and start to get a concrete feel of the finished product!

Hello lovely First Years!

So do you love musical theater? Do you love technical theater? Are you looking for a great group of people to hang out with? Do you want friends who aren't smelly (most of the time)?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions then you should definitely check out Pauper Players.

Here's the official dish (or the offish dish as I like to call it [we tend to abbreviate a lot in Pauper]) from the info part of our Web site:

"Founded in 1989, The objective of Pauper Players is to maintain an environment of camaraderie, learning, and collaboration through the design and rehearsal process of musical theater production. Entirely student-run, Pauper is open to anyone with a dedicated spirit and a passion for the arts, and it has been a source of entertainment, education, and friendship for over twenty years.

Pauper Players is headed by three (student) Executive Directors--for Business, Publicity, and Production--who work with an Executive Board to structure the organization while selecting and overseeing production. The Executive Board is made up of a secretary, a treasurer, designers, photographers, social and orchestral coordinators, a publicity team, property liaisons, and a front-of-house manager. The Executive Board meets weekly to discuss current projects and policies; and, three times a year, they release and review proposals for the respective fall, spring, and winter musical productions.

Any interested candidates may submit a proposal to direct or simply suggest a show for Pauper Players to perform. The Executive Board is responsible for selecting the show and approving the Director to select his or her Production Staff for the rehearsal process. The Director, Music Director, and the Production Staff select the cast and orchestra, and they set the rehearsal schedule for the weeks leading up to production. Pauper Players is normally scheduled to rehearse Sunday through Thursday from six to ten pm, but individual schedules will vary depending on one's role. All are encouraged to get involved at any level, either with any of the three musical productions a year, or with the Broadway revue performed in the winter. "Broadway Melodies" is comprised of three or four shows, written and directed by students in the style of a comedic musical revue.

Pauper Players has performed in a variety of venues on and off campus--including Historic Playmakers Theater, the Martha Nell Hardy Performance Space, the FPG Union Cabaret, and Carborro Arts Center.

Pauper is always seeking to add new members and to expand options for performance and publicity."

Now that you've read that lovely little excerpt let me tell you a little about how much fun it is to be a Pauper.

My name is Emily, and I'm the Executive Director of Publicity. I joined Pauper the first semester of my first year at UNC. I was a little anxious because I barely knew anyone when I got to campus, and went through the normal transitions of being lonely etc. But that changed pretty quickly.

I auditioned for the Fall 2009 production of Andrew Lippa's "Wild Party" and was cast in the ensemble. I almost immediately felt like I had found my family. I met lots of cool people within that cast, and my best friends are the ones that I made during that show.

That's why Pauper is so cool-- the people. Paupers are not elitist, they are open minded, and generally fun. You don't have to be outgoing or the wittiest person in the room to be loved by us! We want to get to know the real you!

All Shook Up auditions will take place next Tuesday, January 18th and Wednesday, January 19th in Hill Hall 107, with callbacks on Thursday, January 20th in Person Choral. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The University of North Carolina Pauper Players is announcing auditions for our spring production, All Shook Up, directed by Nick Culp and music directed by Grace Lloyd. Auditions will be held on Tuesday, January 18th, and Wednesday, January 19th, with callbacks on that Thursday, January 20th. Auditions on Tuesday and Wednesday will take place in Hill Hall, room 107. Callbacks on Thursday will held in Person Chorale Hall. Please note that sign-up sheets will be available in the Union Hub beginning this first week of the semester, and tentative show dates are Friday April 1st through Tuesday April 5th in the Historic Playmakers Theater.

Please note that for this specific audition, everyone should bring a 1-2 min selection of a musical theatre standard that shows off your vocal range and quality. Please bring sheet music, as an accompanist will be provided; a resume is optional. There will be no scales done prior to your audition, so please plan accordingly. In addition, please be prepared to dance, preferably on the night that you sing. The dance auditions will be held that Tuesday and Wednesday from 9PM-10PM. Everyone will be required to come to one of the dance auditions; please be dressed appropriately.

Tech week is drawing to a close!! With the stage and tech crew in 17 hours of load-in on Monday alone, we set the tone for the hard work that would go into this week! The cast and crew have been working tirelessly to create what is sure to be one of the greatest shows EVER in the Student Union Cabaret! And now... the programs are printed, the lines are memorized, the lights are hung, the set pieces are painted, the costumes are hemmed, the sound board is cued, the orchestra is tuned, the shift plot is printed, the chairs are ready and waiting, and the tickets are SELLING FAST!!! Sweet Charity is THIS weekend, November 12th-16th at 8PM every night, and an additional matinee at 2PM on Sunday. Tickets are only $5 for students and $10 general admission.

PAUPER talks with Margaret, the delightful freshman who has the lead role in next weekend's performance. Read a little bit about her in this week's SPOTLIGHT!

Hello! My name is Margaret Burrus and I am playing the role of Charity in the upcoming performance of Sweet Charity. Getting involved in Pauper Players the first semester of my freshman year has been the second best decision I’ve made this year- the first being my decision to attend UNC. I came to UNC from Nashville, Tennessee and was initially thrown by how many people knew each other from home! I wanted to get involved on campus so I could create my own family of friends (aww).

I have been singing and acting my whole life. I have endless home videos of me putting on “shows” for my parents where I would tap dance on the hearth or would sing songs I made up off the top of my head. My mom, bless her little soul, saw that she needed to get me on a stage for my own sanity. I remember, when I was younger, my mom would pour over the newspaper trying to find ads for community theater auditions. Thus, my performing career began: I went to camps, sang in children’s choirs, yaddayadda… I missed out on some of my soccer games or going to some movies with friends, but being in that community really made me who I am today. I have gone to private schools my whole life, so my love for performing allowed me to meet people who were different.

Anyways, the moral of my little saga is that I am drawn to this community. It is not just my love for musical theater that causes me to audition for shows it’s the people who go along with it. Pauper Players is a community of talented, free-spirited students who have lovingly welcomed me into their community. I no longer feel like an “out-of-stater” when I walk across campus and get bear-hugged by someone in the cast. Yes, it has been challenging being the lead my first semester of college. However, it has helped me stay focused on what is important. I find myself doing work ahead of time or leaving parties early so I can be ready to rehearse. I am obsessed with everyone in the cast, especially those who are making it happen. I am in awe of how professional my directors are and their patience with the entire process. I am looking forward to opening night so we can show everyone all of our hard work! Now, I need to wrap this up because…. I have some lines to memorize!

Once upon a time, Pauper Players had a storage unit filled to the brim with props, costumes, and set pieces generated from the past twenty years. And, due to the coordinated efforts of our resource managers, Kelsey Reinhard and Jeffrey Sullivan, (as well as several brave E-board members) the once terribly-disorganized storage unit now looks like THIS!!

Pauper has received some excellent publicity over the past few weeks! Check it out!

First, Pauper was featured in a massive article in UNC's "Blue and White" magazine -- the September 2010 edition. Even the editor, Amy Leonard, wrote a quick blurb just inside the cover of the magazine, directing the readers' attention to the article:

SPOTLIGHT! Featuring: "Sweet Charity" Director/Choreographer Michael McWaters

Last week PAUPER PLAYERS sat down with Michael McWaters, the sophomore Political Science and Spanish double-major from Wilmington, North Carolina. Michael proposed "Sweet Charity" as the fall production to open our 21st Season, and he is currently both directing and choreographing the show. Though it's only his second year, Michael has already established a rich history with Pauper. Last year he debuted as "Jackie" in the 2009 fall production, Andrew Lippa's "Wild Party." He also choreographed the winter show "I Love You Because," and was brought on as assistant director for spring's "Into the Woods." Michael has already shown himself to be a leader with a powerful vision and incredible talent. His training is hugely based in dance, and he is also involved in Blank Canvas on UNC's campus as a dancer/choreographer. He is known backstage as "Silent Killer" for his ability to slice through dance moves like its nobody's business, knocking any competitor into the nosebleed seats with his magnificent form and impeccable timing. :-) Here's what he had to say about the progress of "Sweet Charity" as rehearsals just started picking up speed....

"Sweet Charity" is off to an AMAZING start! The cast is so much more incredible and talented than I could have imagined. We have already tackled 3 musical numbers and a few scenes! "Big Spender" looks amazing!! And only after 2 days of work! Obviously, we have tons left to do, but at this rate we will have lots and lots of time to perfect every little detail. From a technical aspect, lights/sound/and sets are moving along quite fast as well... All in all this will be a show NOT to be missed! Also, most of the cast is composed of first-year students, which is awesome and I have been thoroughly impressed by their talent and professionalism. Of course, the veterans in the cast are STELLAR as well! More updates to come!

To open our 21st season, Pauper Players will present "Sweet Charity" as our fall musical production! Our 20th Anniversary Season!

The 2009-2010 school year marked our 20th anniversary as UNC's premier musical theater group! We had an excellent season, beginning with Andrew Lippa's "The Wild Party"--directed by senior Nick Culp.

Our winter show was "I Love You Because", a modern interpretation of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" directed by Matt Jacques--a junior at UNC Chapel Hill. "I Love You Because" was performed in the Bingham blackbox theater on campus and was a wonderful success.

The "Broadway Melodies" musical revue, performed in late January, featured artistic parodies of Robin Hood, Dr. House, Jacob (Black) and Sons, and hilarious Disney characters. Respective directors--Travis Wright (freshman), Kevin Shaffer (sophomore), Ben Phillis (junior), and Cameron Simmons (senior)--did a spectacular job putting together a hysterical show with only a few short weeks of rehearsal!

Finally, we closed the season with Stephen Sondheim's "Into the Woods" as the spring musical production. "Into the Woods" was directed by Leah Thomas and was a beautiful way to end a memorable year.

Thank you so much for auditioning for the UNC-CH Pauper Players' Production of Andrew Lippa's "The Wild Party" We all know how much courage it takes to sing for a room full of people. Rest assured, you were all a pleasure to watch and hear.

First, we want to make it very clear that if you are not called back for a part, that is NOT an indication that you will not be cast; there is hope for all!

Children of Eden

CHAPEL HILL, NC – The University of North Carolina Pauper Players is proud to announce the spring production for 2009: Stephen Schwartz's Children of Eden. Show dates are Friday, April 24, through Monday, April 27 in the UNC Student Union Cabaret. Tickets are $7.00 for students and $12.00 for general admission.

With a book by John Caird and music by Stephen Schwartz ["Godspell" & "Wicked"], Children of Eden is loosely based on the Book of Genesis and tells the story from the Creation until right after the Flood. The show exams the age-old conflict between parents and children. Act I tells the story of Adam and Eve, Cain, and Abel, and Act II deals with Noah and the Flood. While using the Bible as a plot source, it freely deviates in many details, and is a story of parents and children without a specifically religious point-of-view. There will be an ALL CALL dance audition both Tuesday and Wednesday nights from 9:00-10:00.

AUDITION INFORMATION:
- Please prepare 1 minute of a musical theatre song a capella. (**Please do NOT sing a song from "Children of Eden"**)
- We will be doing scales during auditions to explore vocal ranges
- Please arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your audition time to fill out your audition form if you have not already done so.

Performances will be April 24-27.

Freely based on the story of Genesis, "Children Of Eden" is a frank, heartfelt, and often humorous examination of the age-old conflict between parents and children. Adam, Eve, Noah and the "Father" who created them deal with the headstrong cataclysmic actions of their respective children. The show ultimately delivers a bittersweet but inspiring message: that "the hardest part of love... is letting go."

New Ticket Policy

As some of you may have heard, the Carolina Union has changed their policy on student groups selling tickets to events. They now require that all purchases be made through the Carolina Union Box Office located on the first floor of the Frank Porter Graham Student Union, outside the entrance to the Great Hall. This also means that Pauper will have to indefinitely suspend all reserves for productions as of this Thursday for online reservations and Friday for pit reservations. Any reservations placed before that will be honored. After that cut off time, tickets will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis from the Carolina Box Office. Good news is you can now pay with Visa, MasterCard, UNC OneCard, check, or cash!

The UNC Pauper Players is pleased to announce the return of our annual, student-written musical revue Broadway Melodies for the 2009 season. This year's sets are Gretyl Kinsey's The Dark Knight, Leah Thomas' Lost!, and Evan Mitchell's Super Mario Bros. The sets will be featuring a great array of numbers from major musicals from Disney's Mulan to Urinetown, from Chicago to Les Miserables, and from Footloose to RENT.

Broadway Melodies 2009 will be performed at 8:00 PM on Friday, Feb 6 through Monday, Feb 9 in the Frank Porter Graham Student Union Cabaret located on the Ground Floor.
